As a pharmacist, you’re more than just a representative of your business—you symbolize your profession.
Today, there are more career path options for pharmacists than ever before. Career paths have branched off from hospital and retail settings to nearly infinite combinations of compounding, oncology and more. The diversification of pharmacy career paths helps serve more patients, but it also makes it more challenging for pharmacy students to choose the career path that’s best suited for them.
You can help guide and advise pharmacy students, and answer questions about your pharmacy career path, by serving as an official career path representative. The Honest Apothecary, a blog about the profession of pharmacy, is working with a pharmacy student to start a program that introduces other pharmacy students to some of the many career path options available today.
They have identified 21 major career paths for pharmacists, and are currently looking for multiple pharmacists to serve as career path representatives for each path.
Career paths include:
- Academia
- Compounding
- Consulting
- Critical Care
- Hospital – Director of Pharmacy
- Hospital – Outpatient Pharmacy
- Hospital – Staff Pharmacist
- Industry/ Research

“We know this doesn’t cover every path, but feel that this would be enough to cover a significant majority of pharmacy job seekers with career questions,” according to a Jan. 11 blog post from The Honest Apothecary.
Once several pharmacists from each discipline register, the list will be made available to pharmacy students and graduates, so they can contact pharmacy professionals who are already working in career paths they’re interested in.
Any pharmacist who would like to serve as a career path representative for their field needs to have an active LinkedIn profile. (LinkedIn is a free professional networking site, where you can set up a profile explaining your work experience, awards or certifications, and connect with other professionals.)
You can register to be a career path representative by filling out this form.
