Attending continuing education (CE) sessions is essential to your career as an independent community pharmacy owner or manager.
Whether you’re learning about the appointment-based model of medication synchronization or pharmacists’ authorization to prescribe naloxone, CE sessions allow you to discover what’s happening in the industry today. They also provide opportunities to meet like-minded professionals and to gather new information to use at your own pharmacy.
Additionally, CE credits are required for pharmacists to renew their state licensure.
While continuing education is vital to advance your career, it can be daunting. Attending a large event on your own can be difficult if you’re not a born-networker. And, keeping track of all the information you’re learning is another challenge.
Follow this guide to ensure that you get the most out of the next CE session you attend.
1. Prepare yourself
Before you attend a continuing education event, get prepared.
Study up on who’s attending the event, plan your attire for the occasion and be sure to pack ample business cards.
Another idea to plan for the event is to determine a personal goal. Even if your goal is just to get your name out there, setting an objective ahead of time will encourage you to make the most of your CE session.
2. Make connections
During any CE event, it’s likely you’ll meet other industry professionals. So, be sure to practice your networking skills before you go.
Be ready to explain your business, your interests and yourself. Prepare a quick 30-second or so introduction and make it interesting.
For example, if you own a telepharmacy, be sure to include that unique detail in your elevator pitch.
3. Register—and keep track of—your CE credits
CE is essential to maintain your pharmacy licensure.
Be sure to register and keep track of your CE credits through the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). You can learn what’s required in your individual state by referring to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).
Although electronic records are available, be sure to personally keep track of your credits by maintaining a file on hand in your pharmacy. This can also help you remember to keep track of renewal dates, so you can plan your CE courses accordingly.
4. Choose programs wisely
You have numerous CE programs to choose from today. But, picking the right program can be a challenge.
Choosing a CE course that fits well with both your personal and professional interests can help you get the most out of the program. And, you’ll be more inclined to attend an event that will contribute to your professional growth if you have an interest in it.
For example, if you’re interested in gaining provider status, consider attending an event in which you could learn more about how you can expand your role in the pharmacy.
5. Participate
Participation in a CE event is not only beneficial to yourself, but to your colleagues as well. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, take notes and join the conversation.
When you contribute your own expert knowledge and opinions, your peers will have the chance to learn from you.
